In 2014 MØ has released a stunning debut album, performed a string of sell-out shows, partied the night away with bestie Elliphant, and now she’s seeing in the new year in the hallowed tradition set by ABBA, Hurts and Sugababes, with a downbeat number reflecting on life etc. And like the Christmas angel she is, she’s given it to us all as a free download. Takk, MØ, and godt nytår.
Written in 2012 but only seeing the light of day now is this killer track from one of Sweden’s leading up-and-coming rappers, in a collaboration with one of Sweden’s sweetest-voiced pop stars. Eboi hasn’t got too many tracks to his name to date, but is being championed by Adam Tensta and could be set for big things. Little Jinder, meanwhile, released an English language album to moderate success in 2013 but has now switched to Swedish and has released some very exciting tracks (with some fantastic videos) before her forthcoming new album, due in the last week of November. On the RMH Records blog, Eboi states that this track was written “at a time when increasing feeling of hopelessness was repeatedly being reinforced by bad news and burning buildings. Written at a time when descending into the depths of indifference seemed inevitable.” So pretty bleak stuff, but still an excellent tune. And a free download.
We’re not sure who to blame for the fact this has been around for a couple of weeks but we’re only hearing it now, but someone is in trouble. Remember the first time you heard Seinabo Sey and were a little bit blown away and very excited? Well, you’re about to have that feeling all over again with this incredible soul track from Swedish newcomer Snoh Aalegra. This track has it all: sultry lyrics, an actually-good guest rap and a small cluster of electric guitars towards the end that make us shiver. We’ve had a frantic scurry around the internet and there are a few other tracks there, like Burning Bridges and the equally new Fire’s All Around You. There’s also a new version of Bad Things with a rap from Killer Mike which is a free download on Soundcloud. Huzzah! There could – and should – be big things for this lady.
Updated: the EP There Will Be Sunshine is now out – and is really excellent – and there’s now also a suitably moody video for Bad Things.
