Always at the cutting edge, we have to write about Ida LaFontaine, the latest in a long line of up-and-coming Swedish popstars. The 17-year-old unleashed Anthem last summer and an accompanying video this January, but we all know that it’s better to be late than never so with our tail between our legs we are writing about it now. It’s a massive pop song that you could absolutely imagine being a breakthrough hit across Europe come the summer, just like Icona Pop’s I Love It was, and Ace Wilder’s Busy Doin’ Nothin’ should have been, and like almost anything by Zara Larsson might well be. There are a few other songs on Spotify which don’t quite live up to the expectations created by this, but with buckets of charisma, a new contract with Universal Music Group and as a confirmed friend of One Direction we suspect the hit songwriters will come flooding in.
January has been a pretty stunning month for new Scandi music, so here’s our roundup of the best of the month. The Soundcloud list is pretty comprehensive, but criminally Zhala’s brilliant Aerobic Lambada is absent from YouTube.
We feel very late to Zara Larsson. We liked Rooftop but then had a skim listen to the rest and thought it wasn’t particularly special. But since the international release of her Uncover EP we’ve become a bit obsessed. It fills any temporary absence left by Rihanna extremely well and with the traction she’s gaining in the US it’s looking like 2015 could be a very good year for Zara. The title track, a big emotional ballad, may be a couple of years old now but it’s the song that’s being pushed next and has a new video (filmed in New York, notably). Zara is also becoming a star on social media, after putting a condom on her leg to prove that no man is ever too well endowed to rubber up, despite what he may tell you. Amazing.
